Dr Shroff's Charity Eye Hospital has an Eye Bank to serve the need of corneal transplantation. To facilitate eye donations, Dr.Shroff's Charity Eye Hospital deputes trained Grief Counselors at multi-speciality Hospitals under the Hospital Cornea Retrieval Programme.The focus of these personnel is to approach a family in the event of death; sensitize them about the issue of corneal blindness and request for corneal donation of the deceased. On a positive feedback, the base hospital is informed and a dedicated team rushes out immediately to do the needful.

A tissue has to be harvested within 6 hours of death and the transplant surgery has to take place with-in a maximum of 72 hours.

The importance of this initiative can perhaps be understood best when we understand that at any given point in time in the country, there are a 100,000 adults & children whose dark life can be changed with the help of corneal transplantation. Unfortunately , in any year, only about 25000 tissues are harvested!.

Till date cornea specialists at SCEH have made a difference in the dark life of over 250 adults and children.
