Cornea & Anterior Segment

The objective of this program is to train ophthalmologists in the diagnosis and management of corneal disease and cataract through clinical evaluation and research, the use of various investigative procedures, medical treatment and surgical intervention.

Duration

Three months

 

Session commences

January, April, July and October every year.

 

Places available

One candidate in each session

 

Eligibility

Practicing ophthalmic surgeons with experience in the subspecialty

 

Selection

The applicant should have the potential to develop the subspecialty service at his/her location.

 

Application procedure

Applications must be accompanied with curriculum vitae and photocopy of certificates.

 

Course Curriculum:

 

Clinical Diagnostics

Fellows are trained in the use of slit lamp, biomicroscopy, keratometry, computerised video keratography, pachymetry, specular microscopy, slit lamp photography, A-B Scan ultrasonography, and tear film function tests.

 

Laboratory diagnosis

Microbiology: Smear preparations, culture methodology and interpretation for various corneal infections including bacterial, fungal, viral and parasitic.

 

Pathology

Preparation and interpretation of specimens of various corneal pathologies including scars, edema, dystrophies, infections, and degeneration.

 

Immunology

Understanding of various techniques like immunohistocytochemistry, serology, etc.

 

Medical treatment
strategies

Corneal infections, corneal immunological disorders, dry eye and ocular surface disorders, degeneration and dystrophy, complications of keratoplasty, complications of cataract surgery.

 

Surgical training

An opportunity for hands-on surgery is not provided in the short-term fellowship. However trainees are encouraged to assist in all types of corneal surgeries.

 

Eye banking and tissue evaluation

Tissue retrieval, tissue storage and tissue evaluation

 

Ancillary facilities

The library is well equipped with Videos, CDs and journals. Access to the Internet and on-line databases like Medline are also available. The fellows will also have an access to a well-equipped surgical wet laboratory.
