Vision Centres is an innovative concept to
reach quality eye care services to remote
areas.
The local community, (50,000 to 100,000) comes
forward and dedicates a space for a permanent
clinic and also nominates one person for an
extensive 1 year training in basic optometry
in the hospital.
The hospital with the support of external
funders puts in some basic equipment for refraction
and examination at the Vision Centre.
Once the person is trained, he /she goes back
to the community and starts refraction services
at the centre. He/She also shortlists patients
for surgery or refers patient to the secondary
centre in case of emergency. Paediatric screening
in schools and increasing awareness levels
in the community about health, hygiene and
eye care is also one of the deliverables.
The Vision technician earns a livelihood from
the OPD collections, sale of glasses, incentive
on surgeries and compensation for fieldwork
of the hospital. The average monthly income
works out to around Rs.2500 to Rs3000 per
month.
