about Vision Enhancement & Rehabilitation
What
is Vision Enhancement & Rehabilitation?
Vision Rehabilitation and Enhancement is
a highly specialized stream of Ophthalmology
available for patients of low vision who
are beyond any medical or surgical treatment.
It is at this point of time that a low vision
examination is recommended. The low vision
examination is a comprehensive evaluation
of the person's efficient use of their remaining
vision. The purpose of this evaluation is
to prescribe optical and non-optical aids
to maximize use of the person's residual
vision.
These services are to provide them a comprehensive
range of vision rehabilitation services,
including assessment, prescription, instruction
and rehabilitation.
Vision
Impairment
Vision impairment is caused by macular degeneration
(the primary cause of blindness in the United
States), cataracts, glaucoma, optic nerve
degeneration, and a variety of other problems
and can occur in any age group including
children to senior citizens.
It can render the person dependent on others
for every simple task, say to read or to
write, walk safely, read price tags, and
medicine bottle labels. A person with vision
impairment may not be able to see and recognize
faces of friends or family across the room.
It can cause frustration, anxiety, and depression.
