Ocular Prosthesis

Ocular Prosthesis Clinic is a specialized service at Dr Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital which handles fabrication and maintenance of artificial eye for patients. SCEH is among the very few eye hospitals in North India that provides in-house ocularist services and ocular prosthesis at affordable rates. More than 1800 patients have benefitted with customised ocular prosthesis fitted by the team.

People who lose their eyeballs due to trauma or following some surgery benefit from this service.

The team and clinic at SCEH is equipped with latest technology for fabricate customised 3D prosthesis to march the colour and give a 3D depth perception, life-like shine, match colour and size as close to the natural eye as possible. Prosthesis are made out of medical grade polymer for comfort of the user.

The Clinic was set up at SCEH, in 2011, after demand from patients who suffered from low self-confidence due to suffering of a painful or disfigured eye, social stigma and loss of function of one eye. The clinic was established under the stewardship of the department of Orbit, Oculoplasty & Ocular Oncology, and caters to the needs of all patients whether operated in-house (tertiary and secondary centres) or referred by government and private eye hospitals.

The movements of the artificial eye and eyelid closure are retained to a great degree as compared to the normal eye. In cases where the space between eyelids is inadequate to fit the prosthesis, (especially in cases of severe trauma, chemical injury, infection, long-standing use of improper or ill-fitted prosthesis etc), surgery may be required to create adequate space for fitting the artificial eye.

In children where the eyeball is severely deformed/absent at birth, near normal facial appearance can be restored by starting the process of expanding the eye socket and fitting an artificial eye early in life.

The artificial eye fits snugly within the eyelids and needs to be taken out every few weeks for cleaning, an easy do-it-yourself at home.

It usually takes about 2 days to make a customized artificial eye.
